I've saved a bunch over time by growing my own basil. Started with seeds and planted them in a pot in my kitchen window. When the stalks get tall and full, we 'harvest' the leaves, keeping the stalks in tact so they can reproduce new leaves in just a few weeks. Same could go for fresh parsley, rosemary, etc. Whenever they start to wilt a bit, water them and they're right back to life, smelling and tasting fresh!

Second on that Olive Oil tip, find a good medium-sized bottle for general cooking and a smaller bottle of higher quality for tasting or salads.

While your at it don't forget the sea salt and the white pepper.
Cracked pepper is a bit overdone, it has a coard flavor and tends to bitter (like garlic) when cooked at high temps... throw in some white pepper at the end and you have a much more subtle heat.

I think you can't go wrong with a perfect set of kitchen knives (makes for great wedding presents for newly weds) and a decent 10" frying/cooking pan (non-teflon, one you can throw in the oven).

Great suggestions. I'd also like to add getting a rice cooker (<$50) to open up to a huge amount of low-cost soups, rice/veggie, rice/fish, and other kinds of dishes. I don't think it's possible to eat anything unhealthy out of one of them. Dried lentils and other beans are cheap and come out well in a rice cooker.

Also, don't skimp on the olive oil! Get a big cheap bottle for adding to water, and a better (but within budget), smaller one for dips/dishes.
