How Much Will You Benefit From the Stimulus Package?

President Obama will sign the $787 billion stimulus package into law this week, with approximately 35% going towards tax cuts and the rest going towards stimulus spending. Just about everyone stands to benefit from the stimulus in some fashion in the short-term, but a few demographics have an opportunity to reap more gains than others. Here is a list of seven groups of Americans who stand to gain the most from the soon to be enacted stimulus package.
1. Wage Earners & the Self-Employed
Wage earners and the self-employed are eligible for up to $400 a year for single taxpayers and up to $800 for couples filing jointly in both 2009 and 2010. If you are single, the credit starts to phase out at an adjusted gross income of $75,000. If you are part of a couple filing jointly, your phaseout would begin at $150,000 of adjusted gross income. You’re probably wondering when the check will arrive. It won’t. The IRS will begin reducing withholding taxes automatically at the clip of about $30-$40 a month. If you are self-employed, you can claim your credit when you file your return for 2009.
2. First-Time Homebuyers
Thinking of buying your first house? Although the oft-mentioned $15,000 credit for all home purchases was dropped from the final stimulus package, first-time home buyers can still claim a tax credit of up to $8,000 if the home is purchased between January 1st and December 1st of this year. If you purchase between these dates, you won’t have to repay the credit, as those who purchased in 2008 are required to. This is only for primary residences and the house cannot be sold within 3 years in order to keep the credit. Huge bummer for aspiring house flippers.
3. Home-Owners Looking to Improve Home Energy-Efficiency
If you’ve been thinking of adding new windows, an outer door, insulation, or other energy-efficient improvements around the house, this might be a smart year to do so. The max energy-efficiency credit has been raised from $500 to $1,500, and from 10% of the project’s cost to 30%. Additional purchases include energy efficient appliances such as air conditioners and water heaters. Before making a purchase, make sure the product is eligible for the credit.
4. Vehicle Buyers
If you purchase a new car, light truck, SUV, motorcycle, or RV after the package has been signed, you are able to deduct state and local sales or excise tax on the first $49,500 of the vehicle’s cost. This deduction starts to phase out for single taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes over $125,000 and couples over $250,000. You get the deduction whether or not you itemize on your return. If you’re in the market for a plug-in hybrid, you could benefit from a credit of at least $2,500 on up to $7,500.
5. Students
The American Opportunity (formerly known as HOPE) credit for college expenses will increase from $1,800 to $2,500 in both 2009 and 2010. The credit covers 100% of the first $2,000 of tuition and related expenses per year and 25% of the next $2,000. This credit has also been extended from two to four years of college and can now count against book purchases. Credits are phased out for singles earning over $80,000, and married couples earning $160,000.
6. The Unemployed
Have you been laid off recently? Take some solace in knowing that the first $2,400 in unemployment benefits received can now be excluded from income. Additionally, you may also be eligible for a 65% subsidy for up to 9 months if you stay on your former employers health insurance policy. You will also start to receive a $25 weekly increase in your benefit check.
If you’ve been worried that your 26 weeks of unemployment benefits were almost up, you may now benefit from up to an additional 33 weeks through the end of the year. Check with your local unemployment office for further clarification.
7. Middle Classers Scheduled to Get an AMT Tax Hit
Middle classers can expect a $500 increase in the AMT exemption for individuals, to $46,700, and a $1,000 increase for couples, up to $70,950. This temporary fix is thought to free 26 million families from the AMT in 2009.
What’s Next?
The stimulus package has not done much to solve the foreclosure and negative equity problems that the country is facing, and the market has reacted with uncertainty as a result. Many homeowners were hoping an across-the-board interest rate decrease would be worked into the stimulus package and were disappointed to get no relief in this area. The next step for the Obama administration should be to create a plan to help stem foreclosures before they’ve already happened. Meanwhile, how much do you stand to gain from the stimulus package?

« Previous 1 2I have to say that I could use this, I’m a recent college grad in Detroit and over half of my graduating class don’t have jobs, or are living below the poverty line. I don’t think this will solve the problems our country faces but I’m hoping this will get the ball rolling. Obama is looking at the dealings of some of our best presidents to see how they helped the american people, and I think that is wonderful. Hopefully our country will stop being a Economy of Consumption and spending and go back to what it was in the early century, a democracy. Right now our country is in financial ruins because of a pointless war, and allowing companies to become monopolies until now there are only a few companies that own everything. It’s hard to graduate Magna Cum Laude then come into this adulthood with no job or prospects, it isn’t my fault I apply to over 20 jobs a week all over the world. The world is in financial trouble and I’m hoping that this stimulus may help bring up our country a bit.
So good luck Obama, I don’t want you to fail cause I cannot afford another 4 years of minimum pay.
I voted for Baracko but can’t get past this whole stimulus package farce. Maybe the gubmint should just print up a few trillion extra bucks and give it to themselves to pay off the national debt while they’re at it. Oh, and by all means, let’s give the banks and auto makers more, too. How about if the auto makers give us a car that gets 40MPG?? A $500k cap on exec salaries??? Puleeeeease… Has anyone EVER seen an NFL team shuffle numbers to get under the salary cap? More fluff. Optimism is good but it doesn’t pay the mortgage… you know, unless you decide to quit making payments and go into foreclosure… the good news is that you can now buy your house back, with gubmint assistance at a much lower cost. The fact that the bill NEEDED to be voted on in such a hurry should have been a red flag to a bunch of morons who drag their feet on every other issue (unless it benefits them directly).
I don’t understand why there is an income limit on the First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit for 2009. Isn’t the idea to get any and all eligible and qualified potential homebuyers into this daunting real estate market? Wouldn’t that really take action on the root cause of this economic crisis? To me it seems like Obama and Congress are going out of their way to make sure that anyone they consider ‘wealthy’ doesn’t receive any benefits or relief.
srnoncom, I feel ya. I’m a single parent in the same wage range and I’m facing college expenses for my daughter next year. What the FAFSA says is my expected family contribution shocked me. My salary has increased in the past four years due to promotion, but I’m far from having a stash of money in the bank. What these stupid income guidelines, either in academia or in the tax world don’t take into account is that $90K out in the hinterlands is not the same as $90K in a higher-cost area. I pay $2200 a month rent to live in a house that’s so old it leans to one side and the plumbing breaks regularly just so my daughter could go to a well-run, safe, school system. I can move after she graduates to a less-expensive area, but farther from my job and that’s my plan. Monthly payments for a mortgage plus taxes (and association fees at a condo complex) would be less than the rent I pay now, but I cannot save for a down payment as I live to the penny. The solution is to move to a lower-rent area now that I don’t have to worry about school quality and save the difference in rent, but it sucks that I will only have had the chance to be a homeowner AFTER my kid is grown up.
I worked 3 hours today and that is the only wages i drew. will I get $800 for that?

the only way to get this country streightened out is to get rid of illegal’s and give americans their jobs back. i find it very strange that our government cannot define illegal.if we do anything illegal we pay a fine or worse. our govornment can
do whatever they want and for some reason it is not illegal.
IS IT TIME FOR A REVOLUTION ????????????????
So many of us tried to tell you obama fans what was going to happen and you did not want to hear it. You put an empty suit into the white house because of your hat e for the republican party. No other reason other than to vote against republicans. You reep what you sew. lets see where we are today, people are still loosing there homes, gas is going back up, the market is still sh*t, bailouts are going on, the war is far from over, we no longer use the trem “terrorist” (I guess that term was to close to home for the “o” man) water is still poluted, veterans are still given below standard care, ect… Those of you who gave this a*sho*e a platfor to stand on might just have completly sank our country. Please note that I refuse to capitalize his name or refer to him as “president” I do not accept him as my commander in chief and he sure as hell is not my “leader” I hope all of those who created this mess enjoy having to press “1″ for english the next time you order a michael moore documentry. I have to agree with Mike above,
hey busta nut.. no offense but you sound so stupid. It was the republicans who started and created all of this shit. Obama just happened to get stuck with all the dirty work bush left behind along with the rest on the republicans. not for nothing but the united stated is not in its best years and most likely going back to the great depression, at least obama is trying to help the people although there are certain rules he as well has to follow.. The man is not god but i am glad he was chosen above the republican.
Hey L.Star, I would never ever listen to a Republican. They can’t even own up to their own mess and quick to pass the problem to someone else — Obama. They have no respect or dignity except for themselves. That’s why we get comments like the ‘Busta’ above. Furthermore, that is why our country is in shambles. They just don’t get it and are out of touch most of the time. I am currently looking at buying a house as a first time buyer and have found a number of banks that will not accept FHA loans. This is most upsetting, especially if any of those banks or smaller branches accepted stimulus money — I will have to find that out. Now, if the Obama administration is not aware of this, they should be because its a shame.
Hey Sala,
Cant you see that the whole Democrat/Republican thing is a divide and conquer tactic? Do your homework and you would see that the differences in the way these two entities behave is almost identical. You generalize and lump all republicans into one stereotypical group, which is basically a racist thought pattern. Do you generalize all black and hispanic people as well?
