One sign of the importance of silver in history is the name of my home country, Argentina, which is derived from the Latin "argentum" (silver). Bear in mind that we are talking about the 8th largest country in the world...

The first European expedition that came to this land had the mission to find an easier route to the silver mines at Potosí, now Bolivia. The settlements they started on their way to Potosí include the first foundation of the city of Buenos Aires, in 1536. This now capital city is located on the shore of the Río de la Plata (silver river).

Unfortunately for them, the road from Río de la Plata to Potosí was too hazardous, so this mission, and the one that followed, didn't succeed. Nevertheless, the Spaniards were able to deplete those mines. In the process, the local population didn't enjoy anything close to a fair share of the riches sent to Europe. Instead, thousands of miners died from lead poisoning. This is probably one of the reasons for having, nowadays in Bolivia, a government that is so suspicious of foreign investment.

Besides being the reason for this country's name, and its river too, Potosí's fame reflects in the fact that some mining towns in the U.S. bear the same name.

The story of when the Hunt brothers cornered the silver market in the 80's is a really interesting tale.

Thanks for the great informative article. As a longtime member of mint I really appreciate information like this. And, I happen to be exploring different investment options including investing in commodities directly (purchasing precious metals such as gold and silver) as well as the companies that mine them including the one you've outlined.
