There are a growing number of options for health care for independent workers. There are companies like Mavenlink.com where you can buy single-payer insurance at reasonable rates. Also check with your local chamber of commerce!

Having the support of a larger entity is vital. As a freelancer, it is all too easy to succumb to the larger corporations. I generally spell out every detail on my proposals and often require a retainer to start working. My clients seem to respond more positively and take the project more seriously as a result.

This article has some great tips, I freelanced for over 18 months without health insurance (BIG MISTAKE) and ended up in the ER 5 times during the period. Once the bills finally arrived I was now $18K in debt and slowly worked my way to only 4K of debt in 2 years trying to clean it up.

I’ve bseen fortunate enough to qualify for free state health insurance, and if your state provides it, I’d look into your options. It’s not something I enjoy taking part in, but it helps when you just don’t make enough yet to pay yourself.

As for retirdement, I haven’t really started anything except some random 401k’s and IRA’s old employers set up. If you guys can post a little more on retsirdement plans, or at least good resources, that would be great.

I’m really into financial blogs and I really love the Mint blog especially. The content of this blog is interesting but I find the woman in the ad to be embarrassingly attractive. I can’t focus enough to read the blog.

Great post. I have a little side income from writing and this is very helpful. I think the hardest part of it is dealing with the tax implications of income from 1099 forms in addition to my W2 from my regular job.
