I’ll have to agree with @Expat. Especially if you live in a very strict country (whether it be culture, laws, or environment), it can be very tough for any expat. It takes a lot of flexibility and patience in dealing with different cultures of different nations.

Good article but be aware of some downsides. A large number of Americans who go overseas to work don’t last 90 days due to culture shock, living conditions, and work environment. For those who do tough it out, time overseas rarely is a career enhancer — it’s often viewed as “lost time” by U.S. employers. Also, most expats return to unemployment in the U.S. so expect a three- to six-month period to find a job in the U.S when you get back.

Thanks for that link Dustin as well as the insight on teaching overseas. My girlfriend and I have been really interested in teaching abroad and wanted to get more information on certs and whatnot.

I visited Chichen Itza this year in May, Ross. I was also bummed that I wasn’t able to climb the steps as well.

“Don’t wait until you are too old to scale the steps of Chichen Itza to travel.”

I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but I visited Chichen Itza just last year–they don’t allow people to climb the steps anymore. I was really bummed.

If any of you are interested in teaching overseas, either contact the Ministry of Education in most countries or use a recruiter. I would personally recommend Rowan Hall at http://www.esl-planet.com

He was able to assist me in the whole process, from the application, to visa requests, to follow-ups after school placement.

Great idea about teaching overseas. Plenty of opportunities to travel, learn a language, save money, pay virtually no local taxes, rent free housing, low cost health care, etc.

I am currently in South Korea teaching at a public school and I find it quite a change from teaching at a public school in the US. The changes are, for the most part, quite positive.
