There is obviously a lot more to figure out about this issue, but you made some really good points. I will definitely be checking here more often. Thank you.

It's always better to exhaust other means of financial student aid before resorting to loans.

Some even take online degree programs in order to pace college costs more effectively to make it easier on the pocket. Studying at home also means saving more money.

I also have about $40,000 in student loans, though that is after undergrad and grad school. I took out way mroe than I ever needed, the thought of actually having to pay back the loans never really occured to me. I hope our high schools and orientation programs at colleges can get better about encouraging students to take out less, work more, etc.

I too have approx 80k in private and 22k in fed. I made the mistake of going to a Large Private school instead of a state school.. Could I have achieved my current position going to the state school? Maybe, but maybe not. Every day I think about what I could be doing with the $1400/month I spend on paying that evil woman Sallie Mae. Some friends are buying homes and investing, I am worried about potentially getting married with such debt. My only short term hopes are the $2 I spend on Powerball tickets. This is life and we must learn from our experiences and mistakes. MY brother is a freshman this year at the state school I should have went to and he got a full scholarship and will graduate with $0 student loans. My troubles turned into solutions with him, I urged everyone to help someone in a similar fashion.

The big problem here is simple: school is really expensive. (and for some reasons people don't live at home while they do it)

My wife and I both graduated without student loans. Yes we lived at home, but we paid for our tuition with earned money. However, we graduated in Canada. The entirety of my Computer Science Degree w/ books (completed in 2002) was less than $24k. And that's in Canadian (which was trading at 70% of the USD at that point).

Again, there are four posters above all with loans that exceeded the costs of my entire degree. 5 years later, I'm now living in the US making $75k (in the midwest). So it's not like suffered from some form of crappy schooling.

So back to the big point here... why the heck was Ben's degree so expensive?

Again, as a student I could fully pay each year's books / tuition just by taking on a full-time summer job (let alone the TA work I did during the year). Clearly this is not happening for any of the other posters. Doesn't this raise giant red flags for people here in the US?

Same boat for me. I just came out after double majoring in two liberal arts disciplines with $60,000 in debt. I helped put myself through with an IT career though, so I'm hopefully lined up for a decent paycheck now. But with the job market like it is... It could get bad.

I have less than $2000 left on a graduate student loan ( undergradute was on a full scholarship ) of $40,000. It was indeed a struggle in the beginning. But as my income rose quicly ( most likely due to that graduate degree ), it became easier to pay off.

There are many state forgiveness loan programs which will repay private educational loans as well as federal ones.

Two years after receiving my undergrad degree, I'm over $80,000 in debt. At least mint.com helps me keep track of it all.

www.studentpwned.com - You can watch my interest accrue every second!
