I started freelancing when I was unemployed and couldn't find a new job. I was on unemployment insurance, but it wasn't enough to fill the gaps in the bills so I started freelancing. Bad, bad, bad, you cannot freelance and collect unemployment, it's illegal and you'll be required to pay it back, face criminal charges, and be fined. If you're going to freelance, you have to report your earnings to the state. This will mean you'll probably lose your benefits, or may qualify only for partial benefits.
