We always seem to have old phones around that someone in the family ends up using. In fact, my sister, who had refused to upgrade, finally accepted a phone from my daughter this weekend because she was having problems reading her texts. Otherwise, she would still have the same flip phone with the antenna sticking up because she “loves” her phone. On the other hand, my daughter loves items that are posted on both eBAY and Craiglist’s and has purchased phones, furniture and other items. She swears by them.

I recycle old cell phones that really can’t be used anymore. But if the phone is still in good condition, I sell it. I got $60 for my old T-Mobile Sidekick.

I keep all of my old cell phones in a little electronics museum in my office. Its fun to look at how far technology has come. The few cell phones that I have given away, I donated to shelters for families and women. They give them to people that need cell phones but can’t afford to buy them.

As long as my phone works, I will continue to use it and replace only when necessary. When that happens, I will recyle it.

Maybe we shouldn’t be buying products that obsolete a year later. That canon camera you mentioned could have been rendered worthless for the past 4 and 1/2 months because APPLE, Canon, and Costco basically said screw you to the consumer and continued making and selling their products even though the Canon Power Shot camera software presently does not work with Snow Leopard.

Something to keep in mind when recycling electronics is how and where it will be recycled. Most recycled electronics end up in the third world where the easily recovered valuable minerals are recovered with no regard for the environment or the health of the people doing the recovery. Exporting electronics to such places is illegal in most 1st world jurisdictions, but is still the most common way electronics are recycled. Chose a reputable recycler like a local FreeGeek or government run/sanctioned recycler.
