If you have retirement accounts, think about cashing them out while the market is up (it won't be for much longer) and pay down all your credit card debt.

Paying yourself in that way will be better than any return you are going to get within the next 10-15 years on your current retirement account investments.

I did it on Jan 4th... being net positive going forward at last after 10 years of constantly plugging away at it at low interest rates (which skyrocketed thanks to greedy corps sticking it to you any way they can to someone with an 800 credit score) has made me feel better and have a new outlook on life. Pay yourself first. Seriously.

Debt can only bury you if you let it. But it always makes it feel like it's hard to breathe. First rule when you're in a hole:stop digging. Stop spending, put the credit cards down. Then work on making more money, spending less and negotiating with creditors to chip away at debt.

Check out http://debtbeat.com for some cool tips on making extra cash on the side and getting out of debt.

Yes, debt CAN bury you, if your definition of "bury" is bankruptcy (or a bad credit report for 7 years). There comes a point in debt where you simply cannot afford to pay the interest and the minimum payments at least to get out of debt within your lifetime, I know because i was almost there! I was using my credit card to buy food and i could only pay my minimums. Luckily I had room in my budget to scrimp so that i could pay more than my minimums and avoid new debt, and thats how i started digging myself out. No amount of negotiating with your creditors is going to make your debt go away, and there is a limit to what they will do for you. Either you must pay it, or file for bankruptcy, and if you dont earn enough to pay it, well...
