Some great info here, I was also unaware that a good/bad credit rating made such a difference, cheers.

As an extension to number 8/9, you should also be able to get cheaper rates when you insure several cars with one company. If you live with other people you can sometimes get a policy that covers all the drivers living at the same address - in the UK these are called 'Multi-car policies' although presumably there are similar policies available in the United States.

We have some more info on these policies here:
<a href="http://www.bestmulticarinsurance.com/2010/02/5-things-to-think-about-when-choosing-multi-car-insurance/" rel="nofollow">5 Tips for getting better multicar insurance</a>

You should also be able to get a discount if you insure several cars with the same insurance company. In fact, in some cases you can also receive a discount for insuring multiple drivers at the same address - good if you're living in shared accommodation, for instance.

I agree that paying up front is always the best way to handle an auto insurance premium.

It is unfortunate to hear so many of my fellow users with inaccurate info on how insurance rates are calculated. Some of the comments, like rental car coverage is a neon sign for being more likely of having an accident is very false. Your collision coverage rate and rental rate are two different pools. Every insurance company pushes agents sell rental coverages. Also underwriters do not calculate rates, they determine eligibility and tier placement for clients.

I knew an insurance underwriter who told me that having rental car coverage on your policy was like a giant neon sign saying that you were a high risk for collisions, and thus you paid for it through your premiums. I think she said the statistics said you were 50% more likely to be involved in a crash if you had rental coverage than if you didn't.

Regular maintenance. Taking care of your car will result in less headache in the future for you, your car, and your insurance. Accident rates and safety concerns increase when you neglect regular maintenance. Less Accidents = Lower Car Insurance Premium

ps: Still giving out a free book? =P

Taking a Defesive Driving Course should be on the list. Most can be taken online at your own leisure rather then sitting in a classroom all day for 8 hours. They are pretty inexpensive and will make a HUGE difference on your premium.

If public transportation were more manageable here (Southern California), I'd consider it.
