Gee, tax refund time just happens to coincide with the start of gardening season. Spend some of the refund on seedlings and plant some produce.

Bruce - I appreciate that you understood how I pointed out that it was A proper use. I don't, however, appreciate that you had to attack my understanding of context, when you completely ignored the context of my post. And just so I make it crystal clear as to the context of my post: I was commenting on how a person's need to attack the semantics of an article title was trying to take focus away from the content of it. Tony's comment (down below) had a great way of trying to bring attention to the correct terminology while still commenting on the subject matter.

Thanks for being a grammar nazi, Bruce. Everyone loves them and you sure showed me. Per usual, this is why I tend to stay away from making my own grammar/word choice comments online. When that nerve gets hit again, I will just ignore it.

@Craig K, "return" may be A correct usage grammatically, but it is not THE correct usage in tax terminology. Returns and refunds are two very different things where taxes are concerned, and should be understood as such. Overloading the term "return" to fit a grammatically correct definition shows a complete lack of knowledge of proper terminology.

Next time, don't get so caught up in the dictionary definition that you ignore context.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_return_(United_States)

The "tax return" is always and only the form/information you send to the government. The money you get back is a tax refund.

These are some great uses for you tax REFUND (if you are getting one). Personally, I would prefer not to have a refund (by adjusting my withholdings to make sure I am not overpaying), but if you are getting a refund, I also agree that you need a plan for what you are going to do with it. Otherwise it may trickle away and you will have nothing to show for it.

Normally I refrain from grammar/word choice posts, but yours just hits a a nerve. Tax return is a correct usage.

Return (verb): to revert to a former owner. As in: the Government took money from my paychecks during the year in the form of income taxes. The Government will return some of that money in the form of a Tax Return.

Next time, don't let the grammar nazi in you get out.

ARGH. @Mint keeps tweeting the same error: "how are you planning to use your tax return this year?" I plan on sending it to the government, because THAT'S WHAT THE TAX RETURN FORM IS FOR. Then I'll get a tax REFUND.

This makes me stabby.

I realize this makes me a word fascist, but please stop calling tax refunds "tax returns." A "tax return" is the document you fill out and send to the government that tells you how much tax you owe (or how much of a refund you'll get back). It's difficult to find frugal uses for that piece of paper. A "tax REFUND," on the other hand, can indeed be put to many wise & frugal uses.
