Agreed. If you're planning a wedding, treat your guests well. If someone offers to help then, by all means, feel welcome to accept if you feel comfortable. There's nothing tacky about hosting a nice wedding if you can afford to do so. Just don't expect your guests to fund your dreams.

It's not proper to ask guests for any type of wedding gift. It's up to the guest to choose a gift for you. You're hosting a party for THEM, they're the guests.

Actually, please DO be afraid to ask for cash for a wedding gift. Asking for any particular gift isn't appropriate. Tell a couple of close relatives what you need/want and let them tell guests who might ask.

Great post as I am about to get married to my longtime girlfriend. Definitely will hint at a few of these to her.

I disagree with Annie. There are non-tacky ways to ask guests to give cash gifts which can offset the costs of the wedding or honeymoon (or in the case of my wife and I, moving expenses and new furniture). In my mind, it is FAR more tackier to throw an expensive wedding with unnecessarily extravagant decorations in an over-priced venue... but each to his/her own... I won't pass "right vs wrong" judgements as the above commenter did.

Seriously? Encouraging brides to buy shoddy knockoffs (that are ILLEGAL, I might add) from China, and asking guests to fund the wedding? This advice is not just tacky, it's downright WRONG!

Nice post! A few months ago, I put together a week's worth of wedding advice on my blog, much of which had to do with saving money.
