Great advice. With so much focus being given to a CV and job application, it can be easy to forget to check what's out there already, i.e. if your Facebook and Twitter are public, and what they say about you (as well as what you've said)...

Great post! I really like you idea about establishing a professional presence online. If employers are going to Google you -- and they will -- then create some content that you'll be glad to have them discover.

In my new ebook, "Becoming a Rare Find: How Jagged Resumes Lead to Great Jobs," I offer some more ideas about how to do this.

1. Set up a "professional" Twitter account where you share timely articles about the field you're interested in, and provide some commentaries or quotes about the takeaway messages.

2. Create a short video on YouTube that shows you in a professional setting. It doesn't need to be ultra fancy. Just talk persuasively about something you believe in, if you're looking for a sales or teaching job. Check out the book for more details

Hi Nicolas-I agree that for freelancers with experience and contacts, you’ll typically have more success as a “free agent.” But, many recent college grads haven’t had the opportunity to build the portfolio necessary to even be considered for such opportunities. For those folks, freelance sites are an excellent way to get a foot in the door to building a professional history, and some real experience.

I disagree with pursuing jobs on freelance sites. These are widely known for screwing freelancers and encouraging terrible rates.

If you have to freelance, do it for local people. For example, I teamed with a designer and make websites for her clients. I never had to run ads, because I'm already packed with work.
