I'm somewhere in between, much close to Alice though. 95% (originally) of my portfolio is split 4 ways between 4 index fund etfs, one tracking the S&P 500, a second tracking the Wilshire 4500, one tracking the MSCI emerging markets index, and lastly one tracking the Bond Market through the Aggregate Float Adjusted Index. I rebalance yearly on those, but otherwise make regular contributions and leave it otherwise alone. I'm thinking about maybe diversifying more eventually and adding some international bonds and an international emerged market fund. The 5%? That's my "fun" investing money, to do the things I shouldn't do with my normal portfolio, like try and time the market, pick an individual stock, etc. I've done well enough with it for it to now be 7% instead of the original 5, but there's no way I'd risk my retirement on my luck/ability with stocks. I don't intend to rebalance it back to 5% though, but I'd reconsider if I ever did so well as to hit 20% or so of my retirement funds. The 5% keeps me engaged and entertained, but it's not enough risk that I'd jeopardize my retirement if I picked an Enron.
