“Roughly 80% of these diamonds are cut in Antwerp.” – This statement is entirely wrong. 92% of the world’s diamonds are cut in Surat, India.

Nice post, curious why you left out the synthetic diamond industry. It’s currently miniscule, but the future has potential to initiate massive changes.

I recommend the documentary “Bling” to anyone interested in diamonds. It’s truly disgusting.

Thank you for including the “controversy” section of this post. It’s unfortunate that many people are not aware of “blood diamonds” and buy them without knowledge of what evil occurred to mine them. If people simply refused to buy blood diamonds, the market would die overnight and this terrible practice would be put to an end.

I dont think your stat saying – “Roughly 80% of these diamonds are cut in Antwerp” is accurate. Probably 80% of diamonds are traded through Antwerp, but cut definitely not. India is the largest diamond ‘mfg’/'cutting/polishing’ market by vol.

I find this article interesting, but I would argue that the diamond trade was not as exclusively in Jewish families as the article suggests. Much of the diamond cutting and processing has occurred in Jewish communities throughout Europe, but to say historically that Jewish families controlled the trade is a big overstep.
