I have a nice Fidelity Investment Rewards Visa Signature Card with WorldPoints Rewards -- a lengthy name for a rather simple rewards card. You can use the points for any number of things, but I've only ever used them for one -- 1.5% cash back on EVERYTHING dumped into the Fidelity account of your choosing. You don't need to keep the money in the Fidelity account -- you can transfer it out into your checking account the same day if you want to. No worrying about how much cash back you get on which items, just spend what you need to and get 1.5% back. http://personal.fidelity.com/products/checking/content/mcplatplus.shtml.cvsr

My favorite card is the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Card. Why:

1. Starwood properties are nice (Sheraton, Westin, W Hotels, etc.)
2. You can redeem points for free room stays.
3. You can use a combination of cash and points for some hotels. When I stay at the Sheraton in Krabi (Thailand), it costs me 1600 Starpoints & $30 USD per night to stay in an awesome resort. You will find this fairly common in many of the hotels in Asia that the Starwood properties have.
4. I earn points for staying at the hotels & earn other benefits (room upgrades). If I charge my room stay to my Amex card, which I obviously do, I am rewarding myself with additional points as well.

I find that the Starwood Card to beat the pants off of the airline cards (my personal opinion).

I agree with the tip about making sure the benefits you choose lead to something you will actually use. We are currently putting a lot of use on a card which will get us free flights for our move overseas later this year, and it will make a big difference in the overall cost. We won't have to cash in the retirement annuity just to relocate, at least... great tips!
