When I registered on facebook, I deliberately set wrong personal information and tried to delete my account. I noticed a few things that frightened me:

- accounts don't really get deleted, they just get deactivated. Whe I reactivated my account all information I uploaded was back online.
- after deleting my gender, facebook still wrote "xxx has changed his profile". Even if you want to delete your personal information, it seems that facebook stores them in separate tables.
- when people invite other people to facebook, but they do not respond, it seems that the profile data is already being generated. You can find people in facebook, that never registred, but have already more then one friend. So it's possible to do network analytics on people that never registered.

this is all very scare... and I wonder if this is all within regulations.

You also need to be careful of using a "blanket account" - for example, this site allows you to connect with your facebook account. Another account that is often used as a "blanket" is an aol/aim account. It is less work to simply connect with those accounts and not create a new password, etc., but is it less safer as well? Something to consider.

Another good thing is to occasionally google yourself, all your email addresses, etc. Realize that websites like 411.com will likely have your address and phone number.

Its interesting you say Mint only asks for the bare minimum, just a zip code - are you aware that outside of the US a zip code/postal code narrows down location a lot more closely? Here in the UK, my postal code tells you exactly what street I live in, and that's the case with most cities and small towns... if there's only 10 or so houses on said street (possible in the UK where there tend to be lots of little streets with different names and codes rather than great long roads with hundreds of houses) that's pretty specific. So its one of the pieces of information I tend to be very cagey about online.

You said Myspace and Facebook does not specifically say that they don't share information. They do mention that in their privacy policy as of June 2008.

MySpace will not share your PII with third parties unless you have given MySpace permission to do so (See “Use” below).
