i had one of these accounts but now an looking. they are variable rate and when the rate starts to decline it declines rapidly. mine went from 5% to less than 2% in 5 months. that's the real catch. i am trying to find another bank that has the same features which is why i came here. it was a great ride until now and i am hoping to find another..

Almost all the reward checking accounts require 8-15 transactions with your debit card each month. In addition, they usually require that you enroll in e-statements, set up one direct deposit or ACH auto debit and access online banking. Raritan Bank Federal Credit Union requires 8 debit card purchases, Capital Bank and Keystone Bank require 10 debit card purchases.

I know quite a few banks that offer a high yield checking account. If you go here: http://www.bankfriends.com/tags/checking-account you'll see deals posted for Keystone Bank, Cross Keys Bank, LGE, Coastal Community Bank, Liberty Bank as well as Bank of the Sierra as mentioned in the article. These posts have details on the account requirements you are looking for. Some of the interest rates shown are lower now, but the account details haven't changed. This should help you get a better idea if this type of checking account will work you.

You're not going to find products with rates equivalent to some of these reward checking accounts unless you lock your money up for 5 or more years. If you can meet the account requirements, reward checking accounts are the way to go.

So what's the catch?

"If you use a debit card as often as you tie your shoes, it’s a slam dunk"

Does that mean 30 transactions a month? They use the example of the Bank of Sierra but they give ZERO details on what the requirements are.

Sigh. The difference between real journalists and bloggers...DETAILS.

Please post the names of community banks and credit unions paying anywhere near 5% (or even over 4%). The only list posted by someone else on digg showed fewer than 10 paying barely above 4%, and three of them had horrible reviews. Why would the author write this without such a list?
