Generation Y are people who still enjoy the comfort of living with their parents or at least receiving a great financial and other support from them. Therefore they yet have not felt any need for saving. But these turbulent times will surely teach them the importance of financial planing and insuring themselves for the future.

My goodness...if there is one thing as i have gotten older and realized...it is that i have a finite amount of time to contribute...and the lack of money saved is the greater the misery one will have as they age....Your health is fickle and fleeting...it will happen...and you will go from thirty to fifty faster mentally than actual years.
Please save with the intent to never get access to those funds...always save for a rainy day...always plan how much life energy it will take to pay back with interest.
And make sure you are taking care of yourself as no one else will. You owe yourself the time and attention and unfortunately money is comfort...that is reality.

Another good way to motivate Gen Y-ers is to expose them to the realities of those living with more expenses and debt than they can manage - it certainly worked for me!

One hopes that online financial management apps - like mint.com & others - will catch the attention of Gen Y-ers and help make financial management less initimidating & more engaging...

This is definitely an interesting thing to think about. Do you think it is related to the concept of envisioning yourself as successful in order to be more successful? Because if you force people to think of themselves in the future, they certainly aren't going to imagine being dirt poor. They are going to imagine being wealthy, and then focus on what they have to do to achieve that.
