Yet another official weather emergency is in force in New York City this winter as inch after inch of snow piles up on city streets and parks: the second snowstorm of 2011, and the year’s barely even started. But while kids may rejoice at the idea of another snow day, businesses — large and small alike — are hardly in celebratory mode. Just one big snowstorm or blizzard can cause millions of dollars in losses for businesses, before we even factor in the cost of lost productivity, while cities spent millions more to clean up streets.
