"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

This is elegant and simple and does not leave a lot of room for interpretation. No where in there does it say that "Congress shall make no law except for corporations" or "Congress shall grant an exemption to unions"

I can't stand unions. But they have just as much right to political speech as you or I or a corporation. If myself and a friend want to form a corporation or a union, the government should not be able to limit our political speech.

I really don't like 90% or more of what unions and a lot of corps. have to say, but I defend their right to say it.

The real problem is that about half the population is very easily swayed by the techniques used in advertising and now the companies who are the very best at those forms of hyponosis will be able to use even greater sums of money to more directly get their favorite politicians elected. I guess the next step will be that Kennedy, et. al, will be granting other rights of citizenship to corporations and soon they'll be able to vote according to their net worth since the supreme court has elevated them to citizens. By golly, corporations should have the right to bear arms, if you use Kennedy's thinking.

Comparing the amount unions could contribute to what multi-billion dollar corporations can afford to throw at politicians is disingenuous. Add to the fact that I as a consumer have a completely different political philosophy than my mortgage company and have no way of stopping it from taking the money I pay them and donating it to a politician I would never vote for.

I think you're looking for "effect" instead of "affect" in the final sentence.
