No Funds Left: The Rising Cost of Being an NFL Fan

The 2010 NFL season is just around the corner and football fans are getting ready to head to the stadiumĀ and root for their favorite teams. If you’re planning to take your family to a game this season, you better save up for the experience: the pleasure will cost you hundreds of dollars. In addition to the tickets, which cost an average $74.99 each, you can expect to shell out around $25 for parking and about $5 each for a soft drink, hot dog and draft beer purchased at the stadium. In all, a family of four can expect to pay more than $400 to attend an NFL game: nearly three times what they would have paid 20 years ago.

For a look at the increasing cost of being an NFL fan, see the infographic we created with WalletPop.com, using data from Team Market Report.

Just to help clarify, a dollar in 91 is equivalent to a 1.60 today. So if the average price of a beer was 3.04, you’d expect the price today to be 4.87. The NFL is obviously expensive but it isn’t dramatically different from any other luxury good. It has just gotten much more popular and there’s a fixed quantity available. The value of most NFL franchises has tripled since the early 90′s.

And those “average” tickets will be in a corner nosebleed section where it looks like you’re watching ants move around in formation. You end up mainly watching the screens in the stadium. I ended up just buying a big screen and putting in surround sound at home. Throw in some friends and food and it’s great!

  3. And that’s not even taking into account that some of these teams force you into buying season tickets – I wanted to take a friend to see the Jets this season, but apparently there’s no way to do that…the “all or none” option really gets to me.

$4.09 for the average soft drink? Are you kidding me? That is an absolute rip off. Between food, drinks, and parking it seems that these owners are already making a huge profit off of us. Add the ticket price to that and it’s no wonder the league is making all time earnings.

I understand that owners need to make a profit to keep the league going. But cmon! Good loyal fans are flat out getting ripped off.

And the more government subsidizes professional sports franchises, the higher the cost for attending games is. Talk about socialism. Our eyes are in the wrong place when it comes to what affects us. We have more in common than the media wants us to know.

Wow big deal ,it is 2 times for our chinese’s salary.

  8. That’s why Major League Soccer is a great alternative. Red Bulls tickets family packs are about $100, that gets four people in the door. Then they give you a $20 food/beer voucher. Best deal in the tri-state area.
