Russia vs United States: A Visual Comparison

Relations between the former Soviet Union and the United States thawed a long time ago and we no longer live in fear of mutually assured destruction. But Russia remains an economic powerhouse and a major player on the world stage. Russia has a rich cultural history and a sometimes brutal military legacy and for most Americans, it remains the “undiscovered” country. Russia’s economy has been in a state of flux since before the Bolshevik revolution but it is interesting to note how the differences in geography, population, and the role of the military ultimately play into the entire economic relationship. A country with that many Grandmasters can’t be counted out.

In order to help compare and contrast the economic differences, we have simplified the data from the CIA World Factbook and NationMaster.com. For the exact numbers in any category, check here and here.

I love the stats, but why not include units?

  2. Cool. Although the one thing that I would comment on is the ‘Total Catholics’ – ‘Total Muslims’ stats, in the offbeat section. Wouldn’t it be better to equate broad religion with broad religion, instead of one denomination of Christianity (Catholicism) with the broad beliefs of Islam? Just my two cents. Interesting stats non the less.

    • ŊªÞ

Really? Looking at the church attendance I’d say U.S.A. are made of utter fail.

This is a comparison between U.S.A and Russia just so you know not America and Russia.

  3. I’m reasonably sure that Russians are happy. Stop pushing your Americanized ideals and look at how corrupt and broken the US is, before poking fun at other nations. Bigots.

    • I’m pretty sure you mean hypocrites.

    • Lol, u’r wrong. Completely. I’m russian and I can tell you that Russia is really in dipshit, almost totally. And very few of russians are really happy. In general those ones who stole some Soviet goods and managed to sell them – those people are happy. And majority of population is very very poor. If you don’t believe me, leave you precious and clean America and come to Russia. But even so, u won’t be welcomed here, because lately russians almost totally hate the US because of propaganda.
      So that’s it.

    • I don’t understand why some people can’t take these comments to a more objective level. First, how do you measure happiness? It’s just a joke statistic, that’s all…no-one is pushing Americanized ideals on anyone.

Also Russia isn’t in dipshit or completely poor, there is a lot of creative ways and opportunities to make a decent living in Russia, in a fair way. Some obviously prefer to blame everything on others or on government. And as far as the US is concerned, it isn’t all that precious and clean either.

Or is all that just my false impression? I was born in Europe, been studying in US 4 years and spend past 3 summers in Russia.

    • Andrey

:-) You right, we are happy!

  4. michael krenzer

This means nothing without scale. Fail!

    • FROsch

why do you need ‘units’ or a scale ??

one of the bars is ALWYS 100% (of what ever it is)
the bar of the other country is the percentage compared to the 100%

  5. I took Russian (language) two years ago, and my Russian professor (born and raised in Russia) said Russians use the term “happy” differently (she was also one of the most bubbly, cheerful people I’ve ever known). While Americans say they’re having a great day, are happy about this or that or in general, Russians are more reserved about their usage, and they generally only use “happiness” to refer to one or so moments in their life. This doesn’t mean Russians are actually less happy than anyone else, it just means they’re less liberal in their self-descriptions.

  6. Michael Krenzer is right. Without actual numbers I wonder if you just made these pretty, meaningless bars up. You’re not just missing scales either — what about units? Are these percentages? Absolute numbers?

Methinks it’s time for someone to brush up on his or her Tufte.

  7. I think the “English Speakers” field was the best. News Flash: Russia’s first language – and brace yourself for this shocker – is Russian. With as much possible offence to those of you who think that everyone should speak English, I dare you to learn a legitimately foreign language. And not just a national second language.

  8. Andrew

    Russia != USSR

  9. I expected better statistics from this website. A disappointment, indeed.

And the off-beat stat about ‘english speakers’ is just absurd! Wow, more Americans speak English in comparison to how many Russians speak English? No s**t. Why not put a stat of how many Americans speak Russian? Probably close to almost 0%.

And about the happiness stat, i’m not sure how that’s measured but I can only guess it’s a load of rubbish.

  10. William

Would be nice if the numbers were included, no matter how “simplified” these charts are.

  11. We have way more rollercoasters than you, Russia! Eat that!

  12. What what a fun set of graphs! This is excellent work!

I’m surprised by all the negative comments. Throwing away units makes this clean, quick, uniform, and aesthetic. If you actually wanted to know the numbers, you could look it up on CIA Factbook or Nationmaster.com.

The charts can only be a good an accurate as the input data.

Great summary! Great work! Thanks for sharing!

  13. You include catholics and muslims, why not orthodoxy? Its the main religion in Russia, so it sort of makes sense.

  14. is_it_not

check out the total public debt and credit differences. This will show you where the respective countries are headed in the future.

  15. Screw Michael

It DOES mean plenty without scale.. Scale isnt needed with its a relative comparison. So…. ‘Comment Fail!’…

  16. Fascinating! I wonder what brought about the idea to compare Russia with America? I’m sure a China/ US, Europe/ US, or China/ Europe graph would be interesting as well.

  17. I would love to know how they got the happiness and corruption indexes. How do you measure corruption? I’m not saying there isn’t a lot of corruption in Russia (every Russian person is very open about this fact), but do you really think there is so much less corruption in America? And every Russian person is miserable? My relatives are plenty happy…

  18. mescalito

    total illegally downloaded movies:
    Russia: 99%
USA: 0.00000001% (<– lame… can you imagine??? in USA they buy movies!!! incredible!!!)

Russia Rocks!!!! best pirate ever country!!!

  19. @Eze
Not one is pushing anything on anybody. No one is poking fun at anybody. These are just statistics! Honestly, STFU!

  20. Anonymous

CIA World Factbook, you say? And just how accurate is the information provided by them? I also like the bias at the end for only choosing “offbeat” statistics that lean favour towards the US of A.

  21. Joebobrandy

Why did you do total Catholics instead of total Christians? 75-80% of Russians are Orthodox, you make it seem like it’s a Muslim country. Also what the heck is “happiness” based on …? I’ve seen surveys that say Russians are more satisfied with life than the average European.

    Otherwise pretty cool I guess.

  22. Joebobrandy

One more thing, you should have included a comparison of % of people who are overweight ;) Physical health is important, no?

  23. AKBoston

It is nice to show bars with no numerical or timeline values. Total abortions is twice more in Russia, but the population is more than twice less there than in US, that means # of abortions per citizens is same there or less than in USA. “English speakers” is also a “smart” column, rather put “people speaking foreign languages” per 1000 of population, that would be more accurate cultural measure than things like “number of chessmasters” :) “Total films made”? Better try average profit % of a movie, then you would see that in absolute static numbers America leads big time, but in dynamic – growth and profitability figures current system has to learn a lot from developing and fast growing economies…

  24. For one thing, movie attendance stat looks unrealistic. There are tons of movie theaters even in small cities, and they are very crowded all the time. About a half of all movie releases are even in the same day or day before the official US release date.

  25. -Russians are Christians however not catholic but Orthodox Christians.FAIL
-Comparing total values is ridiculous since the population of Russia is less than half the population of America. FAIL
-Overall, speaking in terms of statistics, most chars make no sense since the don’t show a scale, where the data was collected and there are no definitions of the parameters. Propaganda FAIL

  26. I agree that units would be very helpful. And some of these stats are more important (and shocking) than others like… uh… HAPPINESS! Let’s get it together Russia!

  27. Jerome

Section 1 (Economy), top right. The graph is labeled “per capita” WTF is that supposed to mean? Per capita what? Presumable GDP since it’s the economy section, but Jesus, it’s not that hard.

  28. Marquizzo

The happiness scale was clearly calculated by averaging the total number of roller-coasters with the total movie attendance, duh!

  29. I forgot my name

    english speakers??

  30. Andrewkoff

LOL! ‘English speakers’ fails! Why there is no ‘Russian speakers’?

  31. Joel Griffith

Who is “poking fun?” Hard to see just how looking at raw data can be twisted into a political fight. Even the brief article accompanying the data was fairly complimentary and recognizing that Russia is a powerhouse.

Sounds like someone has a chip on his shoulder.

  32. I like the Republic of Texas better than them two countries. We dont have as many problems as them other two, plus God made us.

  33. we have 2.5 chessmasters, You have only one :D DD

  34. Another useless graph by an ignorant person. When will this guy it through his thick skull that he needs to include units in order for this to mean something.

This is like the fifth post he has made with these ridiculous statistics and yet have no units. You could say practically anything and make it look good here.

Learn something and put units or stop posting stupid articles! You are making everyone who reads these articles less intelligent. I still don’t understand why Mint.com posts these. Epic fail and very unorthodox.

  35. jorgusch

Soviet Union or Russia?? You know that they do not have the same size, do you?
No scales. This is really bad. A small % symbol would be enough. The rest could be by conclusion (?) absolut numbers or do you use even further values.

So I have to say. Maybe misleading and therefore manipulative. Good idea though.

  36. Andrey

One more stat should be there… Sense of humour :-) And it seems like US rating will be less than 50% :-)

  37. Corruption is wrong . The U.S. is going further in debt . This leads to more deals to be made behind the scenes . Russia has been paying off it’s debt for years . By 2012 they should be paid in full . We don’t even know who the U. S. gov. corporation owes it to ? Yes Russia has corruption, but at least it’s doing the right thing, and taking of it’s business . They just came out of old form of governing . It will take some time before they emerge as really great nation .

I’m glad i can voice an opinion !

  38. slicem

Looks like bullshit. To many questions.

for example gasoline regular is 2.9-3 $ in RF for about half year (”ai-92″ 23-24 ru/L)

    ~2.6-2.7 in US
    http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/wrgp/mogas_home_page.html

  39. well, this time the stats were a bit onesided, as example: who cares about “total English speakers”, it is only relevant for English speaking countries. Russia rocks in many other ways (the author is right…Russia is an undiscovered land for the most Americans)
But anyway, I love your stats Mint! keep going!

  40. ‘Total Catholics’ and ‘English speakers’ really made me laugh! Nonsense! We are Eastern Orthodox Christians and not Catholics. And I am not sure that there are more catholic christians in US than orthodox christians in Russia!

As for happiness – nonsense as well!

    Regards

  41. These are statistics. They cannot be biased. The only thing that can possibly be biased in this picture would be the questions he chose to give the statistics to.

Also, for those of you looking for scale, look at the size of the bars. Do you notice how each category has at least one full bar? This indicates 100%. The smaller one can be interpreted as whatever percent it looks like: half = 50%, 1/4 = 25% and so on. I think this is a really well designed infographic.

  42. According to this graph i can say that Russia is unhappy muslim country

  43. Nikolai

The paradox is: if you’re a cynic, the Russian mentality really is the best one for you :)

  44. Russia is doing Good.
AlThough both have their own pros and cons.
Look at their Literacy Rates, both have equalled up atleast there.

Its going to be a Real Diehard World War Bully Championship with Science, Technology and Nuke Toys. He He.

    As of today,

Its high time, America pulls off from Asian Continent back to hibernation mode in its continent.
The Asian side is laughing on the stupid jokers (U.S Soldiers).

  45. well i just got to say that whoever the fuck made this thing must be pretty damn stupid. considering that the us had a deficit of 4 trillion $ in 2006 im pretty fure that they have a larger public debt. bye the way if there was a russia vs US war russia would go fucking crazy and destroy the US. need proof? look what they did to germany. though chine would destroy the US and probably russia as well (they have 1.5 billion solders).

  46. as an edition to my last comment i would like to point out that though russia is corrupt and overall in deep shit right now the US is in just as much and simply doesn’t feel like admitting it. PS im not from either country im canadian and happen to know a few Russians and a shit ton of Americans. oh and America is fatter.

  47. Looks like America is really going down now. USD getting weaker every week, import rate grows while export rate fall more and more.

    Sorry for you guys.

  48. Adel trunk

Corruption is called lobbying in US.

  49. LexBruS

Well, I don’t think this scales represent the reality well enough. # of Nobel prize winners in US is much higher, but are there really so many bright people in the US? I know many examples when Russian people did not get rewarded for an invention or were not even able to promote it. I do agree about drinking part though :(
