Many of the events which led to the recession as well as the high level of unemployment had been occurring for many years. Ultimately this seemed to all come together at one point resulting in this scenario. The unfortunate likelihood is that this will take quite a while for the financial side to fully recover.

I have been looking a look at unemployment recently because I think here in the UK it is going to get quite bad. Now we have a new governement they are going to start cutting public sector jobs. There is only one way unemployment will go.

Did anyone read the article for it's content? GREAT ARTICLE! I wonder if anyone else noticed...or if they were too busy checking for typos. Hmm, no wonder most Americans can't balance their checkbooks. As for VT being the "best in the union" WE ARE ALL AMERICANS. Try to learn something from this site.

To the previous poster:

The map and graph show two different yet connected statistics, The map shows INCREASES in unemployment from the previous year using a color coding system(although i am not a fan of the colors chosen to represent the percentages, sacrificing easily discerning different rates for the sake of matching the website's layout). The graph shows the individual state's unemployment rate TOTAL in ascending order and keeps the color coding to show the increase as reflected in the map. To use an example Indiana's rate has increased more than 1% but is in the middle of the graph due to it's already high percentage of unemployment rate from the previous year. Hope that helps

TERRIBLE graphic. The colors should be a continuum from darkest (worst) to lightest (best). But your's randomly makes states in the middle of the scale look dark. BAD BAD BAD. This major blunder totally destroys any intuitiveness to the graphic. FOR SHAME!

I was reading the unemployment stats in my local newspaper this morning, and came to the internet wondering whether anybody had mapped change in the stats over time ... great!

I'd like to see this map become a dynamically updating one, so it never gets stale.

It's sad that people are more concerned about abbreviations than the reality of the unemployment #s.

Looking to government to create jobs in a capitalist society is about as useful as looking to a rainmaker to dance about and bring the rain. Don't blame whatever administration is in place, our problem is us!

Because we expect to buy everything cheaper and cheaper, the manufacturing jobs get exported to places with cheaper labor costs than America. When was the last time the majority of things you bought had "Made in the USA" stamped on it? When was the last time you actively sought to buy products that were made in the USA? Until the people clamor for their TVs, refrigerators, toys, furniture, etc. to be made in the USA again we will continue to have levels of unemployment that creep higher and higher.

Unemployment is a big sore for every countries. It is sad that in this time of technology there are more persons not working and facing hopelessness. I sincerely hope that employment will be more for this year than the ones before.
