Free Money Manager, Serving Fresh Features Today

We released a number of improvements to the Mint.com service last night. These include new features which you, our beta users, requested, suggested or demanded (but always politely). Everyone at Mint appreciates it when our users take the time to provide us great feedback; its helping us get better every day. Thank you.

Here’s what you’ll find at Mint.com now:

  1. Create a budget template!

You can now set monthly budgets for any spending category you like, and then see how your spending is tracking vs. that budget throughout the month. And, as you might expect, we’ve simultaneously added a Budget Alert. So when your spending exceeds your target, you’ll get a prompt and courteous reminder…but only if you ask us to

    Tracking your budgets.
  2. Easier Work:Life Balance.

Okay, not exactly, but you will now be able to separate your business and personal spending on Mint. Or separate your individual accounts from your joint accounts. Just “hide” accounts to create a clean and custom view of your spending in the way that works for you.

Separate and exclude business accounts from your personal accounts!
  3. We’re into Labels.

You can now label your bank and credit card accounts with whatever account name is most intuitive for you. And you can now change categories and rename transactions just by double clicking on the category or merchant name shown. On reflection (and with the benefit of your feedback) that just seemed more intuitive to us.

Give your accounts specific nicknames so you can better identify them!
  4. Little Knowledge = Dangerous Thing.

Now that you’re getting accustomed to seeing all your spending in one place (remember last month, when you didn’t have Mint?) you tell us you want more. So, we’re giving you more in a budget template…More insight into your favorite merchants via an expanded, sortable list of your top spots; Easier access to the detailed transactions within any category. Just click on any wedge of a pie on your Spending Trends page and you’ll link straight through to a transaction list. You’re welcome.

Sort your spendings by purchases or total amount.
  5. Supporting More Banks.

No, we’re not the Fed. But you’ll find that some of the accounts you may not have been able to add in your first visit(s) to mint can now be added. So, please try again. The more accounts you add, the better your budgeting and overall decision-making about your money. And you may just find that we find some more savings ideas for you.
  6. Mint Maintenance Crew at Work.

As our user base expands, we’re discovering and fixing a lot of dirty bank data just for our users. This month, that means you’ll see less instances of duplicated transactions, or mislabeled transactions. Next month, we’ll no doubt find even more messy surprises. We’re thinking of buying some of those snappy janitor jumpsuits in Mint green. If we do, we’ll definitely post the pictures.
  7. A fresher Mint experience for you…and for your friends?

We hope that these and many other enhancements, bug fixes, and redesigns create an even more valuable free money manager for you. If we’re on the right track, we’d be honored if you’d share Mint with your friends using our new Tell a Friend feature.

Thanks for using Mint.com,

The Mint Team

  1. So then this must be why the site is broken at the moment. Not to tell you what to do, or anything, but a little notice on the home page would be nice. Some people probably aren’t apt to check out the blog to see if you guys are fiddling with stuff behind the scenes. They’ll just assume the site is broken and leave.

  2. Great work! Keep it up! Looking good…

That said, the most obvious issues from poking around with my wife lastnight:

    1. Consider a preference that simply retains the downloaded name. Example: Pool.com is a domain registration company, and Mint changed it to Pool and Spa, categorized in Gardening. The information I need is there, but usually overwritten by the server. I’d like not to have to change this each time. A checkbox somewhere would be perfect, until the system is smarter…

    2. Recommendations which you probably already know: ING and E*Trade accounts making 5% are categorized as 0%, recommending an upgrade of course to what I already have…

    3. Until a reconcile feature is available, should we just flag transactions as “confirmed” or “reconciled”? I know everything is already reconciled, but if the bank makes a mistake, I need to review and call them on it, not just go by what mint tells me…

    4. Consider an Advanced Search: Search by amount?! Did I overlook this, as I cannot locate how…

  3. I’m really looking forward to split transactions. My wife shops (a little too much at Walmart) and gets Personal, entertainment, and groceries on the same bill. Maybe I’ve missed this feature – but if not I’m looking forward to it.

You are doing a fantastic job helping us manage our money better. Thank you.

  4. Eagerly awaiting the logins for Citizens Bank and 1st Financial to actually work. But good work otherwise.

  5. Great work you guys.
Here are some more suggestions for you. Maybe for the next update:

Just signed up tonight. Great website – love the ease of use on this site. I currently use MS Money and can’t wait to switch everything over to Mint. I do have a couple of suggestions.

    1. Will there ever be a way to track assets on this site? I’m thinking in Money, you can track your car and if you link it to the MSN site, it will update the market worth. It would be nice to see that sort of feature on this site as well.
    2. Also, tracking principle and interest payments – are those possible on this site – especially for mortgages?

These features would make it possible to get a true net worth on the spot.

  7. Ryan: Thanks for the comment. Sorry about your comment being held up by the spam guard. The new features went live at around two in the morning on Oct 25th, so you shouldn’t have experienced any problem on that night. If you haven’t reported the bugs already, please let me know what problems you were experiencing and I’ll make sure it’ll reach the proper people. Thanks for the suggestions too, as we’ll be looking at ways to better inform users on new changes.

Brett: Transaction truncating is a known issue, and we’re working on making the naming system smarter and more accurate (it does tend to get a bit aggressive sometimes). You should be able to create a rule to always change that transaction name by checking the box “Always rename ### as ###.”

The SmartSave system will definitely be improved upon as we expand the database and make the algorithm more robust. In regards to reconciled features, unfortunately that’ll be further down the product road map so I can’t provide a proper response for it.

An advance search function on searching by amount (or other variables) would be a great addition. Thanks for the suggestion! You can currently search transaction by merchant or category name.

Nate: Split transaction is definitely coming, as we can definitely relate! A simple trip to retail stores such as Costco or a Wal-Mart Supercenter for supplies can definitely involve more than one transaction category!

David: I know from the forums that you’ve been trying to have access to Citizens Bank and it’s something we’re actively pursuing with the vendor. Thanks for your forum participation. We appreciate the constructive comments!

Abhishek: We actually did work on a few of the features you mentioned on your blog post, namely expanding the “Spending Trend” page and adding additional budget categories to track. Being able to customize the initial default categories (such as restaurant and shopping) is probably something we’ll be looking at too. As with other comments, we always appreciate product feedback, thanks!

Christopher: Other financial accounts such as brokerages, loans and mortgage are definitely on future release road map; tracking non-account assets such as a vehicle is a good idea, thanks! Just FYI for others, if you have any product idea you can always use our Contact Form to submit these suggestions. We always appreciate feedback as we are striving to build a service for the user.

  8. thank you for the updates, especially the ability to add a budget, and get budget alerts.

I would love to able to receive alerts via SMS.

Also, mobile access would be very helpful too. Thanks.

  9. One last suggestion. I would also like to be able to give access to my Mint account to others. That would be helpful for couples and parents.

  10. Great updates! I love the service, and seriously appreciate everything. You may just save my financial life.

  11. Congrats on another great release! I still love Mint!

  12. It would be nice if there was a way to set up reminders for important transaction (like bills), especially recurring ones. For example, when we select a transaction, a popup could appear asking if the transaction is a recurring one (weekly, monthly, etc) and if a reminder is needed. You could then incorporate those into a calendar view.

  13. Maximillian

Anxiously awaiting brokerage/investment accounts! Any update on ETA?

  14. @Maximillian

We’ll have support for brokerage / investment accounts in a few months…with an interface and view that will definitely impress!

  15. RogerWilco

I think it would great to have offline access via Google Gears. I would like to be able to review my budgeting while on the bus, for example. Other features I desperately want:

    1) Mortgage/loan management features (already mentioned).

    2) A gadget for iGoogle/Netvibes/Twitter. You know the drill. This would be super cool. It could have options to display items like upcoming bills, account balances (some may not like this, but an option to customize would be provided), etc.

    3) Ability to create expense reports! This might be a bit on the edge for some businesses, but it’s the future.

    4) Ability to use traditional accounting methods (yes, set up an account charter for those who think this way).

Thanks for an outstanding product so far.

  16. @RogerWilco

All great suggestions. We’ve considered most of them…but first things first: support for investments, mortgages, and loans with even more great ways to save money using Mint.com.

  17. Budgeting is sweet! I would still really like to see manual transaction entry, though. This has the potential to be a really big deal for mobile users (stop carrying around receipts for everything!). I wrote a very detailed account of the way I think it should work here:
    http://forums.mint.com/showthread.php?t=941

(you’ll notice that Mint now has 2 our of 3 of the biggest things I think people should do but don’t with their money).
    Thanks!

    .wch

Great job guys, my suggestions are that it would be great if there were still a way to export the information to Quicken – I just like knowing the info. is archived there – and providing a manual way to enter transactions for monthly budgeting.

  19. Stephen Barash

    Great job guys.

Waiting for two features before I can come on board:

    1. Billpay
    2. Reminders

    -Stephen

  20. Is there a way to find what financial institutions are supported before signing up?

  21. Perhaps it hasn’t caught on enough to make it worthwhile, but what about being able to track P2P lending investments such as Prosper, Lending Club, and Zopa? Some people have thousands invested here, and it can be a big part of the person’s net worth and investment portfolio. With GlobeFunder and Loanio soon to launch, P2P lending seems to be an increasingly important part of the financial sector.

  22. It’s nice to set up a few dummy budgets to demo the system, but I should be able to delete them. I don’t own a car, so I don’t need a Gas/Fuel one.
