Mint.com Launches Redesign

The paint has just dried on the Mint.com redesign and we want you to be the first to know about it. Starting today, you’ll find a refreshing new look which reflects the new features we’ve added to the site since launch; enhanced budgeting tools, brokerage and investment accounts, mortgage accounts, student loans, and auto loans. We’re also kicking off a series of “how-to” guides designed to simplify your financial life, giving you practical, actionable advice on things like saving for retirement, paying off your student loans, buying a car, creating a personal budget, and more. We’d love to hear what you think of it.

  1. It’s just a frontpage redesign… the post led me to believe that the entire site was redesigned, especially considering the neat beveled chart image in the blog post.

Not that the new website design isn’t good (it is), and I still love the site and the design is by far better than any other alternative out there, but I was a little disappointed after logging in in the expectation to see bigger-better-brighter design, and seeing the same charts and tables.

    Keep up the good work!

is the redesign just of the home page? or is the rest of the redesign still being unveiled?

  3. the homepage redesign is great. nice work!

  4. Hi Gang,

I wanted to congratulate you all on a great redesign and also a great product. I’ve been using Mint since January and really appreciate the work that has gone into making the site user friendly and functional. Keep up the wonderful service, and thanks again.

    Cheers,
    Philip Arthur Moore

  5. Looks awesome — now if us Canadians could just use it ;)

I’m still not seeing any new redesing once I log in. Only seeing the new stuff at the login page.

  7. Why can’t I use https to login? Wouldn’t that be more secure?

Please give me a “login” link like on the old page. That one brought me to a secure site.

  8. Hey all,

The new design is just for the “marketing” side before you log in to the application, but will soon be pushed into the actual application. Keep the feedback coming, I’m listening.

    Thanks,

  9. When will the ability to manually add transactions into Mint get implemented? I won’t be a user until I have the ability to add my own transactions…. I would also like the ability to track bills and have them auto added to the pending transactions when clicked paid. I would like it more like my desktop money software before switching completely. thanks

I have been using mint.com for awhile but I am disappointed by the lack of response to email inquiries. I just receive an automated email that states how happy you are to hear from me but no answer to my question.

I have changed my bank login and mint no longer is updating my account. If I cannot get this fixed I will discontinue using mint. There was a lot of time spent initially categorizing many of the transactions and I do not want to go through that again.

We’re a bit behind on email but I just checked and we’ve responded to your latest email, Tom.

If you need to update the password information for your bank or credit card accounts, please do the following:

    1. Update the credit card or banking account at your bank’s web site.
    2. Come back to the Mint site & use the update option on the accounts’ tab on the Mint site.
    3. This will result in a failure. The failure will give you the option of updating the username or password option. Use this to update the information on the Mint site.

    Stephen

  12. please add an option of viewing account activity on a monthly calendar. thanks!

  13. A calendar option would be great. Being able to see when a bill is due would help tremendously. You already have the notifications in place.

Also, how about a chart (line graph I would imagine) showing debt increase or decrease. If someone is working their way out of debt, it would be a great visual of seeing their success, or failure at reducing debt.

  14. Great job Shorty-Putorti!

  15. When are you planning on releasing the investments feature? This is a significant feature that mint is currently lacking.

  16. The redesign looks nice.
+1 to the calendar view of upcoming bills.
Also, it would be nice to compare utilities this month vs. same month last year. Trailing 3 month trending doesn’t help as much with seasonal expenses.

    Great work.

  17. I hope you’re still in the process of rolling it out. This page is still the old design. Also, the favicon is gone =(

  18. Not a fan of the new design at all. There’s a serious lack of contrast. Green text on a green background? Ugh! The previous design was much better.

  19. The redesign looks cool–I didn’t stick around there very long because I still can’t access my credit union through Mint…I keep pining away for the services y’all offer as they already are, but I can’t use them because you haven’t added my bank! *sigh* Can you focus more energies on that side of things…please? Or give me some guideline (i.e., three weeks, six months, two years…) as to when it might be taken care of.

  20. Yes, I’d like to know when or if you might be rolling this out to Canadians. I’d really like to be able to use this tool, and I know many others that would as well.

    Thanks

  21. I wish that you’d add the ability to:
    1) define your own categories for transactions and see them appear on the pie-chart summary of your budget
    2) allow credit card payments (one of the categories), rent, and any other category which you are currently suppressing from the trend pie-chart to be seen (I’m not able to add all of the credit cards directly into your system, but I’d like to be able to track things categorized as credit card payments!)

  22. i love Mint… however… Since you’re asking for suggestions on the BBS it would be wise to have a larger presence there. Even just to say “we’re working on it”. Like Tom, i received a lovely automated response to my email a few weeks back, but no real answer. Then on the to the BBS 10 days ago and still twiddling my e-thumbs. I was going to move all the business account management to Mint, but I can’t do that without some of the changes that were promised months ago. Sorry guys, the front page redesign is lovely. However i’m looking for good substance first.

    Bummed in seattle.

  23. I love mint, and as a designer, I definitely don’t mind Mint’s overall look and feel. However, after my initial “oooh’s and ahhh’s” at the new home page, I have a few constructive criticisms.

I understand the cool and refreshing look you are going for, but I second some of the above comments — the contrast is just too low. I am a huge fan of subtlety and small type, and yet even I find some of it hard to read. I can’t imagine the bulk of your potential users out there sticking around with a home page where it’s hard to tell content from the background.

Type — You have a lot of good ideas going on. Yet there are a lot of conflicting type choices. I lost track trying to count how many fonts you guys are using. I thought the rule of thumb was 2, maybe 3, distinctly contrasting/complementary fonts. But there are multiple serifs, sans-serifs, and even some scripts floating around. It’s all jumbled… can’t you streamline it a bit?

And the shiny chart is shiny.. and pretty… but usability-wise, does it do anything? What about focusing on color choices of the wedges instead? Color categorizing across the entire interface would be super cool, instead of the random colors generated by the pie graph as it is now.

Overall, amazing work.. these “complaints” are merely aesthetic.. but it’d be super spiffy to see some of them discussed.

    Great job guys!

  24. This design and your last design are both terrible. The UX of the app is pretty decent but the visible design is awful.

None of your greens match. None. Find a single green and some slight variances for texture and stick to it. Pick a contrasting color for pete’s sake. Even on this very blog post the horrid green gradient at the top doesn’t match the green.

Get some consistent spacing. Things seem to be strewn about at random.

I know you guys like gradients but holy cow turn the dial down a few notches. The features pages are the worst. Every single thing on that page has a shadow. And not just any shadow, a 15 pixel offset 25 pixel large shadow, complete with inconsistent light sources. A design tip : If you make everything stand out, nothing will. Pick some things that you deem important and put emphasis on those. Not every single element on the page needs a drop shadow, it conflicts and it’s a mess. Even your gradients have gradients– and did you guys use the airbrush to hand-make the background glow gradient? Yikes. If you’re going for splotchy and distracting you nailed it.

I’m only taking the time to provide this feedback because I enjoy the product. I like the functionality, I just wish it was designed better.

  25. Sorry, I have an incomplete sentence there.

“Even on this very blog post the horrid green gradient at the top doesn’t match the green.”

    Should read :

Even on this very blog post the horrid green gradient at the top doesn’t match the greens ANYWHERE ELSE, EVER.

  26. Thanks for your great site. I wish that Mint would allow check writing like quicken.

  27. Great site, lots of neat features, but I still need custom categories and the ability to manually add transactions!! Would also be neat to be able to schedule recurring transactions.

  28. First I want to congratulate mint on a very nice functional product. It definitely speaks to many people who weren’t use to managing their money with a financial application. I have many times promoted MS Money or Quicken, but many people I promoted to did not like it; however when I started pushing Mint to them about a year ago, they loved it; especially the email updates. I myself have not used Mint as I’d like, because I am still waiting for Custom Categories. It is very difficult to get an accurate picture of my money when I have to remember classifications of my transactions in categories that have no relation or simply mark as No Category. I will continue to wait, because I believe that is the only true functionality that remains in the application. Great product. -Ian

  29. I try to use mint, but several of my accounts don’t want to load. The id’s and passwords work fine on the accounts website, but dont work through mint. Has become frustrating enough that I stopped using mint.

  30. This is far from a redesign. Putting a new image on the front page does not mean a redesign. Post news when there is actually something to post.

  31. Matt H.

When can we expect to see this re-design? I was under the impression it would be rolled out by now.

  32. Armando

I’d like to join in the suggestions for a calendar view. I’ve been using Quicken for years and the calendar view is the most important part of that program (for me). It will show me what bills are coming up, and how much money will be left after they’re paid.
